MODULE I

Introduction to Hijama

  • History of Hijama & Cupping therapy
  • Different types of Cupping therapy (Wet, Dry, Fire and Massage)
  • Effectiveness of different methods of Cupping
  • The correct context for Hijama in Islamic medicine

Learning Outcomes:

Students will know the definition and the history of Hijama. They will learn the different types of cupping therapy and techniques. Also student will learn the effectiveness of the different methods of cupping and the benefits for the patients. They will learn the Sunnah points and the Hadith concerning Hijama.

MODULE II

Hijama In Islam (Sunnah)

  • General Hadith (Prophetic tradition) referring to Hijama
  • Hadith regarding Hijama whilst fasting
  • Where to cup on the body and the ‘Sunnah’ points
  • Hadith regarding performing Hijama on specific days
  • Duas (prayers) to be recited before Hijama
  • Hadith regarding charging money for Hijama
  • Ruqyah (Black Magic) issues and the Hijama Therapist
  • Myths regarding blood properties and black magic

Learning Outcomes:

Student will know the Hadith (Prophetic tradition) on Hijama and understand the spiritual significance of Hijama. They will know the Sunnah points and the Dua’s to recite for the Hijama.

MODULE III

Physiology and Anatomy

  • The Human skeleton
  • Blood production in the body
  • Hijama and limits regarding blood extraction
  • Hijama vs. donating blood
  • Muscle types and Hijama
  • Breathing, sweating and removal of body wastes

Learning Outcomes:

Student will learn about the organs of the human body and relating them to Hijama. They will know the functions of the blood and blood production in the body. Likewise students will know blood types, blood cell count and the limits regarding blood extraction. Students will know the body systems and its relation to Hijama. They will know how Hijama detoxifies the body.

MODULE IV

Medical Concerns for Hijama

  • Health and safety considerations for Hijama
  • Cupping on children
  • Cupping during pregnancy
  • Areas of the body to avoid cupping
  • Heart conditions and blood thinning medication
  • Haemophilia, Diabetes and Anaemia
  • Blood pressure and Cholesterol
  • First aid and the recovery position
  • How to deal with fainting

Learning Outcomes:

Student will be able to show and demonstrate safe practice. Student will know the health, safety, hygiene, protocols and clinical safety. Student will know the correct procedure in disposing clinic waste. Students will learn patient care, communication and patient confidentiality. Students will be able to know how haemophilia, diabetes and anaemia are affected by Hijama. Furthermore students learn how to do first aid and other safety procedures like Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

MODULE V

Cross Infection Awareness

  • Understanding Cross Infection and its causes
  • Practices to reduce the risk of cross infection in Hijama
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Hijama
  • What to do in the event of contamination

Learning Outcomes:

Students will know how to reduce the risk of cross infection in Hijama. They know how to avoid and minimise contamination. Student will know the danger of cross infection and its causes. Student will know the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) when doing Hijama.

Practical Session:

  • You will be practising Hijama in pairs, working in a group setting.
  • We will ensure that you are confident in practising Hijama before you leave.
